Writing Your Elevator Speech

An elevator speech is your basic message delivered in less than two minutes—preferably less than one minute! You would use the whole speech when introducing yourself to a large group or parts of it at networking events. Taking time to write the speech will ensure that you have your message clear in your mind and ready to deliver when the opportunities present themselves. The content of your elevator speech can also be used as the springboard for collateral pieces and your website copy. You can write it in six easy steps, so let’s get started!

1. Your name and brief credibility points about you (if appropriate)
The name of your invention and how to remember the name of the invention or your name (if appropriate)

2. What your invention does and the problem(s) it solves (benefits)

3. Your Target Market—who your product helps.

4. Your Success Story So Far—endorsements, beta tests, adoptions, press coverage, etc.

5. The Status of Your Invention Now—patent status, when it will hit the market, etc.

6. What you’re looking for now—funding, beta testers, focus group participants, opportunities to present, partners, collaboration, distributors, etc.
